California Coastal Commission - Date: July 9. 2009 San Louis Obispo

July 9 : Parking has long been a problem in Dana Point Harbor. The City and County have tried to fix the problems by using the various boater parking lots. No Coastal Development Permit has ever been issued for this activity. Boaters for Dana Point Harbor again asked the Commission to do something about it.

California Coastal Commission - Date: June 11. 2009 Location: Marina Del Rey

June 11: This is a complete video of the Commercial Expansion LCPA for Dana Point Harbor . Bruce Heyman was discussing the Hearing with Chairwoman Neely, Commissioner Wan and Commissioner Burk right before the hearing restarted after a break. It was clear that the issue was going to be continued before the hearing even opened. The County attempted to have the hearing scheduled for July which was in San Louis Obispo but thankfully the Commission agreed that it should be in Southern California . Hearing will be in Oceanside in October (for details click hear).

California Coastal Commission - Date: May 7, 8 & 9 2008 Location: Marina Del Rey

May 7: Irvine Company request to eliminate 27 out of 132 slips. Stated reasons for loss: ADA, eel grass and DBW standards. The Irvine Company consultants were able to convince Coastal Commission Staff that the ratios were preserved; there are "numerous public launch ramp facilities" in Newport Beach along with ample dry boat storage to accommodate the smaller displaced boats.

Unfortunately, the released Coastal Commission Staff report did not include the current conditions, which we needed to verify the Irvine Companies assertions on the ratios. A supplemental staff report containing the current conditions was issued that morning but it was not on the web site or available in the hearing room. This material was subsequently evaluated and was presented to the Commission on Friday (see below).

The following video contains approximately three minutes of testimony given by the Association recommending that the Commissioners DENY this Coastal Development Permit. THIS VIDEO CONTAINS THE STATEMENT THAT OC DPH WOULD CLAIM IS MISLEADING THE COMMISSION.

May 8: OC Dana Point Harbor Director, Brad Gross, testifies that the Boaters Association misled Commissioners on the topic of slip loss in Dana Point Harbor. He also states that the Harbor is a regional facility that accommodated 250,000 visitors to the Harbor’s 16 special functions. A new number for the total costs of the capital improvement associated with the Harbor Revitalization was released by Brad, $120 M. The previous number had been $204.5 M.

May 8 later that same day: Dana Point Boaters Association testified that the community process employed by the City of Dana Point with regard to the Town Center was a model of community involvement. The Association recommended a "YES" VOTE.

.

May 9: Dana Point Boaters Association testifies to the Commission in response to OC DPH’s previous day's assertion that we misled the Commission. We also take the opportunity to use OC DPH’s own slide to validate our statements and compare and contrast with the Newport Slip Loss. The Commission Staff took note of our analysis of the Newport Slip Loss and ask us to make sure that they had a copy of the presentation.

This video includes the purported misleading statements made on Wednesday along with statement that OC DPH subsequently made.
