City of Dana Point and OC Dana Point Harbor's Proposed Slip Loss

As part of the Dana Point Harbor Revitalization process the California Coastal Commission asked OC Dana Point Harbor and the City to be more specific on their proposed slip elimination plan before the Commission approves or rejects the Local Program Amendment in October 2009 (click here for meeting details). The City and OC DPH are using the “Public” Boater Focus Group Process and requested boater and wait list members to vote on how sever to make the proposed slip loss. This Slip Loss Page was set up to help you understand, engage, vote and speak out. It is now too late to vote but never too late to speak out.

As expected the Boaters asked the City and the County to minimize the slip loss and overwhelmingly voted for "Plan O". The City and County have submitted this information to California Coastal Commission staff in Long Beach and we expect that they will include it in their addendum for the October hearing.

Unfortunately the City/County are asking for the right to increase or decrease the number of slips by 100 creating a possible range of slips from 2100 to 2300. We have 2409 today. They are also insisting on “0” overhang which will force 100’s if not 1000’s of boaters into larger slips, obviously with larger slip fees which will increase the County’s already significant profits. The County is continuing with their “Attrition Policy” which now has over 600 families in the harbor with “Temporary” status. And lastly they have configured the end ties to be able to support 10 of the largest boats in the harbor while still counting them as 20 smaller slips.

Boaters for Dana Point Harbor - Recommendations
Boaters for Dana Point Harbor have been participating in the Boaters Focus Group despite the numerous problems with the process. Unfortunately there are some supporters of the methodology being pursued and they are helping OC DPH convince the Coastal Commission that it is a viable public out reach process. As it is the only process the City and OC DPH are willing to provide we encourage everyone to participate. The following documents are provided to assist you in your decision making and allow you to make up your own mind:

1)   Boater Voter Information Packet
2)   Boaters for Dana Point Harbor Blog - Voting
3)   Impact of ADA on Dana Point Harbor
4)   Overhang
5)   Overhang/Channel Width/Double Wides S vs. Power
6)   The Press Excluded from the "Public Process"

Boaters for Dana Point Harbor are recommending all eligible Boater Voters vote for Plan O. Of the four presented for boating it is the least worst plan for Harbor Boaters over the next 50 years. If you’ve already voted, do it again with the same account number and it should allow you to change your vote.

Voting Link
Only one vote per boater is being allowed. All duplicate ID's or non-recognized boaters will be removed from the analysis. You must have received a voter card and must use the account number printed on your address label. Once you locate your account number you can vote here:
